Description: The Watchman Trail heads east from a short access road between South and Watchman Campgrounds. The trail leads one mile through a tributary canyon of the North Fork Virgin River. The route begins from approximately 3,970 feet. Shortly east of the trailhead hikers will cross a small drainage then enters a side canyon. The route crosses that drainage then ascends the northern wall of the canyon. Reaching 4,340 feet and the head of the canyon the trail turns south and contours the drainage. One mile from the trailhead Watchman Trail ends at an overlook of the lower Zion Canyon. The viewpoint at the trail’s end offers outstanding views of the West Temple, the Towers of the Virgin and the town of Springdale. This trail also provides views of Springdale. Rangers lead nature walks along this route during the busiest seasons. It is best to hike this trail in the morning or evening as it is exposed to the hot desert sun for most of the route. Caution: Be careful near the cliff edge. Supervise children closely. Trail may be muddy and slippery after a saturating rain or winter snow.

Description: The Broads Fork Trail leads to an alpine cirque area with extensive rock faces and rugged terrain that is ripped by huge avalanches each winter. The trail begins from the west end of Mill B South Fork Picnic Area and climbs steeply to an overlook. The Salt Lake Twin Peaks and Dromedary Peak surround the cirque at the top of the Broads Fork Trail. The Broads Fork Trail begins by heading west up the heavily-timbered slope. After Hiking for 0.25 miles, the trail turns left and enters the Twin Peaks Wilderness area. The trail continues past a large rock on the the right (west), climbs over a small ridge and enters the Broads Fork drainage. The trail levels off as it enters the drainage and meanders southwest toward the stream. Before reaching the stream, the trail turns left and climbs steeply to the stream crossing. There is a wood bridge crossing the stream at 7500 feet and 1.25 miles from the trailhead. After crossing the bridge to the west side of the stream, resume climbing south up the Broads Fork drainage. The trail head up past several small benches for another 0.75 miles to reach the meadows at 8400 feet. The trail is well-maintained and clearly distinct to the meadows. A small spur branch of the trail veers to the right to reach the top of the knoll and provides and excellent views of Mount Dromedary, Sunrise Peak and Twin Peaks. Climbers can continue on Broads Fork Trail to reach the summit of Mount Dromedary. The Broads Fork Trail is also a popular snowshoeing and backcountry skiing trail when winter comes.

Description: Naomi Peak (el. 9,979 feet) stands higher than any other peak in the Bear River Mountains of northern Utah and southern Idaho. While the Bear River Mountains are not very high for this part of the country, these mountains are extremely rugged and the views from the top of Naomi Peak are simply outstanding. The trail to Naomi Peak heads through spectacular meadows of wildflowers which are at their peak in July and August. The summit offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding peaks and of Cache Valley. From the trailhead at Tony Grove Lake, the trail to White Pine Lake and Naomi Peak follow the same path. The trail climbs gently for just under a quarter mile before coming to a fork. At this junction, a sign points west to Naomi Peak. After this junction, the Naomi Peak Trail begins to gain serious altitude and eventually breaks out into open meadows. At 1.25 miles, the trail reaches a rocky ledge overlooking a subalpine basin. The trail continues to a saddle, then up a rocky ridge where, after about two miles, the summit of Naomi Peak appears. The trees here are stunted by the harsh conditions. After about three miles of Hiking, the Naomi Peak Trail tops out at the divide of the Bear River Range, a sign marks the boundary of the Mount Naomi Wilderness. Naomi Peak is not far to the north. The path to the summit is not obvious but does reach the summit. In most circumstances, the route to the summit is easy see, even if the trail is not. As with all “highest points,” the rewards of being there are more than worth the effort required.

Description: Access to the Red Pine Trail begins from the White Pine Trailhead parking lot. Toilets and a paved parking lot are located at the trailhead. A bridge crosses Little Cottonwood Creek and the trail joins an unimproved mountain road. Follow this road one mile and you’ll come to the start of the Red Pine Trail at the sharp switchback where the road turns east. The Red Pine Trail leaves the road and crosses the creek and ends at the north edge of Red Pine Lake. There are actually four lakes in this basin connected by brooks. The upper lake sits in a glaciated cirque. Fishing is possible but success is only marginal. When the snow falls, the Red Pine Trail becomes the domain of snowshoers and backcountry skiers.
